Factors affecting choice of wheel width.
Like Buck said, you have to figure out how you prefer to grind first. If you down feed .0002 and step over 1/2", then the 3/4" wide wheel might be useful. Like Buck, i am mostly working with situation where " a fair amount" has to come off, but not so much as to waste time milling it first. So...- stephen thomas

PS: unless you have gone over the machine completely and adjusted it up from first principles, the above might or might not be a band-aide. Is the contact drum true? How about the idler rolls? Do what M said and take the belt off, then put your hand in front of the air signal on each side and see if the piston cycles freely. On mine the bolts in that area only hold brackets for the overhead drive. The threaded holes are also not quite like yours, in that they are radial along the circumference of the curve. Small punch milling for horology

Most kids have not been exposed to enough, to actually know what they want to do. If so, great, chase that path! OD Grooving Tool Recommendations
Thinbits? (Kaiser) No idea how pricing compares. All my holders, and boxes of inserts came in a tray in the bottom of a box of Hardinge chucker tooling. I like how the gang tool holders set up; but very little actual use. smt- stephen thomas

Are there any tricks to planing quartersawn Sycamore?
I love that stuff! My memory is that it planes fine until it doesn't, but that the issues tend to be small pockets that suddenly pull out, rather than going bad all over as a lot of wood does once a wild grain area is encountered. Custom Cast Iron castings - any rec’s?
I've never used them, but several friends including Dave Richards routinely use Cattail Foundry. They seem to be responsive & relatively fast, and will cast from existing parts. All points made by OP's in this thread about you cleaning them up, filling holes, smoothing/blending surfaces, etc...- stephen thomas
