Not much you can do for bears, Hold your hat high at arm's length, and pepper spray. Knock out their shoulders with a big gun.
Coyotes, wolves, and cats if they come close they deserve a kill shot becaus animals like that are dangerous to kids..

No gun then perhaps throw rocks, swing your belt at them, to back away, or run away likely get you killed.
IMHO..I'm not responsible for anyone, do what you think is best.

The one who messed up tactically was the cat, supposedly most attacks happen from behind, and the victim doesn't know what's happeneing

if that had been a California Mountain Lion he would never have seen it coming. Evidently the Idaho Mountain like the Idaho residents, is a bit 'slow'

The mountain lion we saw in Michigan was as big as or bigger than a rottweiler or mastiff dog, likely 125 Lb plus. It got to about 100 feet from the cabin then veered south then two days later we saw it walking down the dry tow track ditch. I would not like it stalking me.
The prior sighting was about 5befor our sighting when Philip's dad said he saw a big long-tailed cat come to a bait pill that was set in about the same as our sighting. We doubted that he saw a mountain lion, but likely he did.
Bobcats are very common in Cheboygan and we see them often
, so it certainly was not a bobcat.
100 feet is a safe distance, I would not shoot a cat that only came only that close. I would give one closer a yell, charge, and foot stomp before I shot it.

It would be a shame to kill a Beautifull cat for anything less than true danger.

Many years back in I think Auburn or maybe Colfax CA there was a woman jogger that was killed by a lion . When it was announced that Fish & Game would track the cat down & euthanize it all the animal rights folks got involved & raised a stink . When F& G found the cat & dispatched it was found that the cat had cub's , so here come the animal rights folks again making a stink & they trying to raise money for the cub's , I don't remember just what their plan was. Apparently the way I heard is one on these animal rights folks was on the radio talking about mean old F& G & how they killed a mother cat & they were raising money for the cubs well being , well finally some caller got on the line & he was the perfect caller & he asked where was the money for the jogger's kid's . Oh you didn't know she had kid's? I was told that was the end of the pledge drive for the cubs . Sure the cubs were going to need some help thats what wildlife rehab centers are for , but to hve absolutly no consideration for the womans family , now we're back to the fan .

Some animal rights people think that if a human, even a human child goes into an animal's feeding zone then they deserve to be eaten. Some of these animal rights people are the ones feeding and trying to be friends with dangerous animals so destroying the natural pecking order that keeps people safe.
One would expect a 5-year-old to wonder why a wild lion bit her, it is a darn shame when adults don't know better than a 5-year-old. Back in the day boys would throw stones at dangerous animals, that didn't hurt the animal but taught the pecking order.
