Awesome! Thanks for sharing... I should have ordered a 48 :)
Well, you could not have ordered a 48 on eBay as they have been out of stock. But, I plan to do a short run of them that will hopefully allow me to maintain stock for a couple months anyway. I often end up having to make them "to order." I have another one on hold right now til after Christmas for a PMer who does not post much here who lives in Canada.

I love the process and the learning that goes with each solo casting session. I had made some upgrades to my flask and a new riser pattern both of which made molding a casting just a little nicer yesterday.

ok, I knew you were making these, and that your product was good, but seeing that beauty... well I guess you can put me on the list for a 48.
damn... shouldn't have clicked on this...:D I may add to this order (prob a 8 multi raw), and no rush, but I'm in...

Thank you!

We had a predicted weather window this afternoon that materialized into sunny 43 deg afternoon. I started packing a 48 mold yesterday and finished it this AM. The furnace performed perfectly and the pour went well.

Here is a one minute vid of the pour. The venting seen at the end opposite the pouring basin is occurring where the sand is pierced with a 1/8” pin to allow escape of steam and volatilized coal (mixed with sand) and stops abruptly as the slightly inclined mold fills as far as the far end. After that gases seep out from between the cope and drag and ignite with a “whoomp!” I poured the iron at 2580F. The igniting gas is mainly CO.

Pouring Video 48” Camelback.

If the are questions, I’m happy to answer them. But I’ll stop here or risk boring everyone to death.

The casting will cool overnight and tomorrow morning I’ll know whether the casting is ok or is destined to be remelted.

Every time I pour there is a bit of an adrenaline rush as quite a few hours of preparation come down to 15 to 20 secs that either results in scrap or a nice casting.

Holding my breath, I dug the casting out of the sand this morning and it was a very fine casting, indeed. I try to be as careful and consistent in my process as possible, and yet, sand is fickle and will sometimes fail in unexpected ways. I do feel like improvements I recently made to my flasks, gating and riser have improved the likelihood of success. Making said improvements is a never-ending task in the small foundry.

I will be casting a few more 48's over the next ten to 14 days if all goes according to plan.

By the way, I am not sure if I have mentioned this before here, but for people outside the US and its territories, eBay international shipping offers a surprisingly cheap and fast service. I have made arrangements with international PMers to buy on eBay rather than a direct sale so they can take advantage of that shipping. I do not have numbers at hand. But I can recall a guy not too long ago who lives in Norway buying a 36 and shipping there for a very reasonable price and about ten days service time. The fact that they missed the 10% discount I make for direct PM sales to participating established members was more than made up by savings in shipping. I don't recall exact numbers, but I would suggest investigatring that avenue if you live outside the US.
