You can always do star start. Little bit of extra circuitry, but it's an option.
Yes, but with no overhead requirements beyond the electric bill and ensuring my wife has somewhere to park in the winter. Is this a for-profit endeavor?

Found a photo of the lead-on screws from an archived online auction. Looks like there were half nut sections that went along with these as well. I would certainly be interested if somebody has some of these just lying around :-)
The lead on attachments are rare and if you do any amount of production threading-very nice-we use ours a lot-you will need the correct lead on screw with the correct dogs-so for 1/2-13 you will need that lead screw with 1/2-13 dogs-we get ours from Ghar Machinery in Cleveland-use a die head with a collet set up and bar puller and away you go...pull up to engage the lead screw on the handle on the left-quick accurate-we use one of the W&S Bar turners to turn down-brass 1st-if I have a chance and you want I will sent over some photos of the way we do it...do not sell, give away, or scrap that lathe you will be sorry if you do...View attachment 367598
So how does one determine what pitches can be cut with the lead on threading attachment? The control box has RH - Neutral - LH for settings. Does one use the ram feed settings to change pitches? Would I just calculate the feed settings into the 8tpi screw that’s on there to figure out the thread pitch?
I have seen auction photos online where some machines had a pile of the acme lead-on screws as part of the tooling. I presume in the olden days you would just swap in a new lead screw in the right pitch for the given tap/die you are running.
Thanks for the info, I will likely go that route once I have a stable design. If you are willing to share I’d be grateful to see whatever setup you have. The lead on attachments are rare and if you do any amount of production threading-very nice-we use ours a lot-you will need the correct lead on screw with the correct dogs-so for 1/2-13 you will need that lead screw with 1/2-13 dogs-we get ours from Ghar Machinery in Cleveland-use a die head with a collet set up and bar puller and away you go...pull up to engage the lead screw on the handle on the left-quick accurate-we use one of the W&S Bar turners to turn down-brass 1st-if I have a chance and you want I will sent over some photos of the way we do it...do not sell, give away, or scrap that lathe you will be sorry if you do...
It's called D & D Machine Tool Parts. I bought tooling for my #5 W&S late last year. There's a used equipment dealer in the Tomball area north of Houston. He had a bunch of that stuff in his inventory at one time. Most of his stuff came off of 3A's, 4A's and 5A's.
Hooked air up and at about 95psi voila! She opens and closes just fine on the first shot. I’ll try and clean up and live what I can before I get rolling hard with it. Have not tested clamping pressure, I assume there is some method of adjustment in there somewhere.Dunno about W&S air chucks, but initially I was caught by mine didnt seem to be working......until I discovered it wont work under a minimum pressure, and wont work over a max....something like 90-105 psi.
