Great news! Both machines are up and running! I managed to wire up a RPC to run the chucker which is wired for 240v and a 440v step up transformer to power the bar machine. They both fired right up and besides a little noise from the hydraulic pump, which sounded like air in the lines perhaps, there were no issues identified. I am going to run both in the 10hp mode since I don’t have the power to go 20hp.

Next project is to get them leveled and adjusted in good running shape. I am going to take down the turrets and clean everything up. The bar feeder seems to work without issue which was another good piece of news!

I have yet to run air to test out the air chuck yet, does anybody know what PSI is required by chance?

Found a photo of the lead-on screws from an archived online auction. Looks like there were half nut sections that went along with these as well. I would certainly be interested if somebody has some of these just lying around :-)

So how does one determine what pitches can be cut with the lead on threading attachment? The control box has RH - Neutral - LH for settings. Does one use the ram feed settings to change pitches? Would I just calculate the feed settings into the 8tpi screw that’s on there to figure out the thread pitch?

I have seen auction photos online where some machines had a pile of the acme lead-on screws as part of the tooling. I presume in the olden days you would just swap in a new lead screw in the right pitch for the given tap/die you are running.
The lead on attachments are rare and if you do any amount of production threading-very nice-we use ours a lot-you will need the correct lead on screw with the correct dogs-so for 1/2-13 you will need that lead screw with 1/2-13 dogs-we get ours from Ghar Machinery in Cleveland-use a die head with a collet set up and bar puller and away you go...pull up to engage the lead screw on the handle on the left-quick accurate-we use one of the W&S Bar turners to turn down-brass 1st-if I have a chance and you want I will sent over some photos of the way we do it...do not sell, give away, or scrap that lathe you will be sorry if you do...

There's a used equipment dealer in the Tomball area north of Houston. He had a bunch of that stuff in his inventory at one time. Most of his stuff came off of 3A's, 4A's and 5A's.

Thanks for the info, I will likely go that route once I have a stable design. If you are willing to share I’d be grateful to see whatever setup you have.

It's called D & D Machine Tool Parts. I bought tooling for my #5 W&S late last year.

Dunno about W&S air chucks, but initially I was caught by mine didnt seem to be working......until I discovered it wont work under a minimum pressure, and wont work over a max....something like 90-105 psi.
Hooked air up and at about 95psi voila! She opens and closes just fine on the first shot. I’ll try and clean up and live what I can before I get rolling hard with it. Have not tested clamping pressure, I assume there is some method of adjustment in there somewhere.

My DSG 17t is sucking up way more time than I wanted. It seems that every little thing needs a tune up etc. I have maybe 8hrs a week to piddle around so it’s been slow going unfortunately. On the positive side I’m still waiting on some form tooling so at least my critical path isn’t dictated by my maintenance activities

Apparently in a factory setting ,air chucks were tested for safety regularly, and it seems each one had a record sheet........I havent gone that far,but I can see that you dont want a lump of steel flying out of a chuck at 1200rpms.
