Snagged a Heavy 10 out of an estate last weekend. Story I got was it was purchased new by RCA in 1953, installed in a van for the deceased to use repairing radar units. When he retired in 1986, it was given to him as a retirement gift. He used it until he passed about 6 months ago. I'm not an expert by far but it appears to be in good shape. Better than my 10k anyway. Got a pile of tooling and accessories as well. May be able to sell duplicates and make money off the deal while keeping the lathe....

Nice snag Nova! I hope you got the speed chuck that goes with those collets. That would be a nice bonus. Bill

I'm not sure. It came with 7 boxes of tooling including 2, 4 jaw chucks. Still haven't had time to go through it all. I do know I have two hand wheels and two full collet racks and stands....

Pict of my C9W10JR serial 106183. My grandfather used it for making HO scale trains and other stuff back in the day and then it spent a good 25 years in my fathers basement with not a lot of use. I finally got around to getting it organized for some car projects I've been working on. Figured I would share.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum, lathes and machining for that matter. Always wanted to learn so just jumped in with this. Catalog number 22-AB, which makes it a 9" Junior model. Serial number 33499, which I believe gives it a 1927 birthday. (4 8 26 is also cast on the inside of the bed) I haven't done anything more than to haul it home, identify it, and try to figure out where to start. It looks to have had some modification done, as I don't see where it ever came with a motor. I'm also wondering if it was originally green, or if it was black and someone repainted it along the way. (I suspect it was repainted as there are a few green drips that seem out of character) If anyone has more information about this model I would love to learn!

... of course, it would be rude not to repaint it...

The colour and finish is confusing. Colour is an exact match for Rustoleum Arctic Blue (just Google that phrase.) Threads here suggest it should be blue/grey as it's post '39? (Rustoleum Pale Roundel Blue is 99% a match for what I've seen.) But I've also seen one image here somewhere for a 1941 ex-military SB9 which is pretty much the same colour? But again, the whole tailstock handwheel is painted blue, that's not original? And the apron handwheel has red spokes? But nowhere can I see any evidence of another colour lurking underneath? (The painted change wheels are another colour altogether!) Even the inside of the bed is the same colour? Has someone stripped this already then done a bad repaint? ...

Atreder,
I have a (US-located) 1943 9C in the same blue color that I bought about 3 years ago. First time I've seen that color on this forum. Been contemplating a repaint and still not sure what color to chose. You have me thinking now about this color instead of a 'more-standard' SB grey ...

Our makerspace in Lancaster, PA received this South Bend Heavy lathe as a donation. It appears to be in good condition with the exception of the QC gearbox. The left lever is frozen. We're in the process of disassembling and addressing this problem.

Here are a couple new additions... 1951 heavy 10 and a 1978 heavy 10. bought the '51 for the hand-lever collet closer, steady, and set of Hardinge collets. Cleaned it up a bit and its back on CL. The '78 is a keeper !

I ordered it from a company called front panel express. It is an aluminum plate with a durable graphic overlay. The box is a aluminum bud box that I painted to match.
