Feed drive Master Motor #s; Style 248783 Serial# CP17987 Type PA Frame 5217, Volts 220, Amps .6 ,Phase 3, Hp 1/8 Code Rating M, Temp continuous 50* C
This is so old news but it is real time for us. If these codes do not align with yours, it is a different motor. We are winding down to where these very close machines were delivered.

I'm thinking that these are different motors, as my "Style" and "Serial" numbers are different (120776 and CS40204, respectively) as are the "Phase" and "Code Rating" (the Phase for mine is 2, and the Code Rating is blank). Everything else is the same as on your motor. I wonder, given that 1956 was a transitional year, if they were using parts from the "M" series? Just a guess (I'm quite new to the Bridgeport world, of course).

I've included some additional photos of the entire machine; the turret seems to be from an "M" style, while the ram is the newer style. It seems to have been painted, as it's not gray (thinking that gray is a standard color?); the current paint seems to be a blue of some sort.

Very interesting about Mr. White and your connection; I'll check out some of his books and hope to learn more about how these machines were used to build engines (and most of civilization, it seems!).

Thanks RF; I think you're right - it's working, so I may just leave well enough alone! I'm still learning about these machines, so I'll proceed with an abundance of caution.

Yes. RF got it right. Your head motor has been replaced. Mine is the "pancake" 3 phase 1hp. Your turret fits like mine. It was that special time where both the round rams and V rams fit via a certain turret. Your mill has a longer table than mine. If I were you, I'd be looking at a lighter unit.

Thanks for all the help; I'll validate that the motor is running in the right direction; otherwise, I'm going to leave well enough alone! The ram is stuck, so I'll be working on that too this week, and there are several good threads here on how to approach that, so I should be good to go.

I'm looking forward to making some chips.

Thanks Alum100k; it seems that we have sibling machines, as mine is BR28570 and the head number is J17392. Mine has the 42" table, and so far, things look as one would expect for a machine of this age. Do you have a photo of how your motor wiring is done? Mine looks completely aftermarket, and it would be nice to see an original.

Thanks

Don

Hi Joseph, that machine looks great! That table looks brand new...Thanks for posting the photo; I had my suspicions that the original color was gray (as mine has been painted a 1970's metallic blue). I think I'll be restoring that finish sometime in the future.

I just PM'd KT88 & hope to find out more about this power feed. I've got one like it on a 1946 BP & it has a 120V 1/8 HP motor.
