Just take the belts off and try it.. If rotation is correct, put the belts back on.. If rotation is not correct, switch two legs in the line.. Just be careful of the starter coil... make sure it is not getting the wrong voltage if you choose to swap on the line going in to the starter... Ramsay 1

I recently aquired a k&t no 1 1/2 special plain. Serial number 12-443 does anyone have access to records of sales to determine the history of this machine?

Some of us have Lot Books - which only go back to about Lot Number 1500 in 1929. Lot 443 is Way Back

Serial Book goes back to Lot 600 in 1920

So it would seem any history on Lot 443 is simply not available.

Dredging up this old thread — I’m trying to track down info in machine #2-6719. Specifically curious what model it’s considered and whether it uses a 50 taper arbor...

2-6719 is Lot of 35 1H/2CHL completed June 1952 (You would think that should say 1CH??)

Will have NMTB 40 spindle taper

John, thanks for the speedy response and for all your sleuthing in this and other threads. Did a fair amount of research last night and kept seeing your posts pop up and you’re highly regarded as very even-keeled and knowledgeable...so thanks for what you do for the community!

Now, this machine has me a bit confused. The serial number is certainly correct and it matches in look the 2-HL that you posted a catalog excerpt of...however the mill has a plate on its right side which says “3HP-24-AC”.

Wouldn’t those be totally different models?

You have the PRODUCTION mill version of that machine. Like all production mills, probably lacks the handy type features found on tool room mills

Its was made to take the same cut on all alike pieces, day in and day out

Likely has the RIBBED knee and the extremely limited travel in and out - towards and away from column

AC I assume would refer to AUTOMATIC CYCLE

There are earlier 1H - 12" Mfg and 1H - 18" Mfg and I assume the AC grew out of these - though 24" would be pushing it on these small 3HP mills.

Does yours have the normal looking (as in images above) knee or the ribbed job?

Another oddity is the 2CH was offered with an automatic cycle knee - I own one - though have never used that feature, which is separate from ordinary operation

Maybe I will get around to scanning the brochure with the ribbed knee business

Found some related - 24 AC - but have no idea if this also applies to 3HP version.

Those things are cute! I didn't realize K&T made a machine so small...

Thanks again John, more awesome info. I'm not sure what "ribbed" means when referring to the knee. I looked closely at the few pictures I have but can't tell for certain if it's what would be considered "ribbed". I'm attaching the (terrible) photos I have that show the knee.

I did compare it to a Model H and it absolutely looks to have much more limited travel in and out.

Yep.. I have a 2hl universal "war finish" made in 1943 and originally sold to the Navy...Don't let the size of the little guy fool you.. It will fill a five gallon bucket with steel shavings before you know it..It also works well cutting helices and spirals with its low lead attachment.. Cheers; Ramsay 1
