I always use peanut butter also. I've also done the hair trigger on the mousetraps so that they can't be set down without going off. I use a couple bucket traps these days, one in the attic and one in the detached garage. But I still have a few strategically placed fine tuned spring traps.

You guys saying peanut butter didn't work... Maybe try a different peanut butter? They have differing amounts of sugar and other ingredients, maybe trying a different brand might work.

PEANUT BUTTER DOES NOT WORK!!!

I am telling you these are some sort of crazy mice.

A friend says these city mice “get smart” and apparently that’s the damn problem- smart mice….
haha! that's what I've been thinking reading y'all singing the praises of PB, you've got some country rodents, not at all like the NYC rats that can read the poison warnings on the bait!

Yet another vote for peanut butter, fresh tho! Reminds me I gotta rebait a few, also i prefer to use JiF creamy.

edit: Also I make sure to smear some on the underside for those smart careful licking suckers.

Yes, in my experience they like chocolate as well as the peanut butter. I was going to suggest the peanut butter cups. Hot cocoa mix is also a favorite. Had some mice that went for it every night in the break room at a place where I worked. Had to figure out their route and placed an empty trash can where they jumped off the counter. Bingo, one embarrassed mouse the next morning.

Best thing I found were Rees's Pieces. Chocolate with Uber sweet peanut butter.

I have used varying size pieces of hot dogs depending on the size of the trap as bait. Pretty effective at attracting mice and rats.
