This is really good news fellas! I bought a spare CPU w /1Mb on already but the other (original) only had 256 or 512K been too long, but it is nice to know we can keep these things alive... There are a lot of you-tube videos on effective soldering solutions and techniques. Same for removal. Cool info and even better that someone here actually did it.

I’d like to try it to a spare board

I have done a full back up of the machine parameters and settings and I have all my option codes etc

The only downside is spare boards are around £1500 up to £3000 from what I’ve found so about expensive

I did not have to disconnect the battery when I added the memory. Mine uses the HM62256LP-10 chips. You can check the power supply on yours with a meter on pins 14 (lower right) and 28 (upper left).
By soldering in sockets the chips can be removed again if they cause a problem.
As a precaution when inserting the chips, get the lower right pin (ground) in first.
Jameco.com has these old chips.
Just saw your picture. Your chips are PDM41024LA10TSO, 10ns, SOJ (300 mil) package, low power, 5 volt. Your power pins are 16 (LL corner) and 32 (UR corner).
Here is the datasheet:

Sorry magno, somehow I missed your previous post, I didn't realize that you already did this. Awesome to hear.

Hi

How did you get that model number etc as that is not what is on the memory chips fitted to the board?

mine say

Part No. KM684000BLG-5L
Maker SAMSUNG [Samsung semiconductor]
Description 512Kx8 bit Low Power CMOS Static RAM

Thanks
Marc

I know, for such a low buck investment in components I'd like to give a shot too.
But, to my knowledge, it's never been done. I can only offer the info I have from a installer point of vue.
When we did memory upgrades, it was a fresh board from the factory, and it had no parameters or settings loaded.
When the board is powered on the first time, it has to be told that it's a VF(number), so this will have to be done.
It's not difficult, I think I still have my old service manual that describes the procedure. I remember it was done from debug mode,
and I can walk you thru that if you've never seen it.
Then you load all your saved settings and parameters. You will have to manually re enter the option codes, so make sure you have all of those written down.
The installer who set it up should have written them on the inside of the back door. I think your machine is also within the 200 hour control lock program,
so you may need to contact the HFO to get that. I think that was implemented it 98.
friesen makes a very good point as to the backup battery. If you remove that battery it will require the Initialize procedure to be done. I would definitely
remove that and do the Init.

Hi Roamer

Can you supply the information as to how i would do the re initialisation procedure etc so if i do give it a go i have the info and guide how to re boot and re load all the details

I have already recently done a full machine parameter/settings/programs back up to a usb (i have the usb floppy emulator fitted)
And i also have all my option codes although i know nothing about the 200 hour code

Thanks
Marc

Sure, I'll get it and send it to you. I'll be in the shop friday , so I'll look then.
Most people never see the 200 hour code, it gets entered during he install if the machine is paid in full. They also have a incremental code for machines on a lease, and it needs to be entered monthly.

Here is what I have documented;

- Clear all memory-
This is only possible if you can navigate through the control.
To reinitialize the control you turn setting 7 (parameter lock) to off.
Then you hit the alarm button one time.
Then type DEBUG and hit enter.
At this time you will see a few letter "NNNN"s across the bottom of the screen. This will tell you that you are in the DEBUG mode.

Then type whatever your machine is ex: VF2 and then hit enter.
Your machine will do a few weird things and may even power off and back on. This is normal. You possibly will get a bunch of alarms also. Again this is normal.
Now you will need to load in your parameters.
_____________________________________
-Reset machine serial #-
Press Emergency Stop IN
Go to setting 7 and turn Parameter Lock to OFF
Go to your Alarms display
Type the word DEBUG
Push WRITE/ENTER
At this point you should see several NNN and number at the lower left corner of the screen.
You are now in the debug mode.
Go to your Position display
Page up until you see RAW DATA in the upper left corner of the screen
(the following code contains the numbers zeros, not the letter O)
Type the following CL 13000708 0 then push WRITE/ENTER
Go to setting 26 to see if the serial number has cleared.
If it has and should be at this point
Go to your Alarms display
Type the word DEBUG
Push ENTER/WRITE
Change to any other mode
The NNN and such in the lower left corner of the screen should all be gone
Enter your correct serial number in to setting 26, this will give you a code number you can give to
your HFO that they use to create your 200 hour unlock code.
Then enter the code given to you to clear the 144 alarm.
Check and enter all option codes for purchased options with E Stop pushed in.
i.e. floppy enable, rotation and scaling, high speed machining, rigid tapping, etc.
Go to Setting 7
Turn Parameter 7 Parameter Lock to ON
Release and reset your Emergency Stop and you are good to go.

I think you missed a bit

You wrote

“ Type the following CL 13000708 0 then push” ........

But you did not say what to push?

Thanks

Thanks,

What is the procedure for re loading all the saved parameters and settings etc?

Is it the same as loading a program?

Usb in
Floppy directory
Select file
Press write/enter

Then it loads them into the settings and parameters automatically or do you have to do more than that?

Really appreciate all this info,

I’m trying to get every bit of info possible before attempting this so I’m not stuck waiting and searching if it needs to be done at the time,

The other thing I have read is that sometimes you have to wipe the BBU ram memory?

Thanks
Marc

That was from the picture posted. Mine is a '91 so has the older chips.

Is it not a better idea to get the same 512k 8 bit Samsung chips as I have fitted now as the part number you linked are not the same Samsung and are only 128k 8 bit chips so are completely different? Or am I missing something?

Sorry to seem to question your knowledge, I have no idea about this stuff

Thanks
Marc

Yes, use the same chips that you currently have. Make sure the speed grade is the same, usually indicated by the dash number.

For the settings, goto List Prog mode.
Push the Setting key in Display,
enter the file name you saved the setting under and Read.
This should read in all settings
Push the Param key in Display
enter the file name you saved the parameters under and Read.

Just to update

I have found a supplier for the genuine Samsung memory chips as fitted to my board for £13 each

I have 2 fitted and that gives me 1 meg of memory

I have 14 slots spare so in theory if it works it should give me a total of 8 meg using the same 512k chips

I am going to book in with my cnc repair guy so i can wait with him while he solders in all the chips at a cost of £100

Then i will re fit the board and cross all my fingers and toes that it works

I just have to wait for a quiet spell when im not using the machine to do it

So hopefully in the next month i can update you with how it went

Thanks
Marc

"while he solders in all the chips" - if you have him solder in sockets instead you can pull the chips out yourself if they do not work, or add the rest if they do. No chance of him damaging the chips by overheating. Not saying he would but if this does not work you have to buy a board with more memory from him?

Hi

Having them in sockets makes perfect sense ideally to be able to add or remove them easily But the repair guy advised not to fit memory into sockets due to reliability through vibration etc when the machine is cutting incase they were to come loose over time which also makes sense

If it did not work I would not be buying a board with more memory from him as he does not do them

Thanks

I have not had a problem with mine but you could use the old fashioned method used in the pre-dawn era of reprogrammable chips, loop a piece of thread through the socket pins and around the chip.

Id like to have a look at the sockets but i cant seem to find the correct solder on sockets to suit the sop32 chips?
