Hi,

I'm just starting a one man garage shop in the UK, reading majority of responses I'm seeing it's hard to make money with xometry however I'm wondering if it's feasible with low overheads to make some profit enough to help cover machine payments? Atleast till I build a customer base.

Also can anyone tell me how you become a supplier, is there criteria I would need to meet ?

Thanks in advance.
Aside from Xometry, if you have capacity and can manage reasonable turnaround times and provide decent customer service you'll eventually land some good repeat customers. It's jus a matter of networking and making good parts. Like anything, it comes down to good customer service and a little bit of luck.

As long as your overhead is low, you can use it to startup and get by with it. It’s how I started and I’ve done alright with them. Google Xometry-become a supplier and follow the steps. They send you material and a print for a test part and once you get that done and passed, they open you up to the job board. It’s not going to hurt to sign up! Best of luck!
Hi Miller,
Thanks for the response,
That's good to know thank you, I'm happy to not make a wage initially aslong as I can make some profit to cover the machine payments, I'm in the position where I have nearly everything worked out except for how to get some work so this would get me going, I will still have my day job paying by bills.
Are you in the UK ? I know a lot of guys are US based and wondering if there is alot more US based jobs...
Thanks again.

Thanks average Joe,

Currently I have 100% capacity I haven't even ordered the machine yet, as nervous that I need to find some work, but it's abit of a chicken and the egg scenarios...

This sounds like it might be a good start for me to get some work that might help cover machine payments even if it doesn't pay a wage, I'm not concerned on paying myself just yet as like you say that will come over time and I will still have my day job.
Thanks for your response 👍

LOL you have nearly everything worked, except the most important is how to get work.

Best laugh I've had all week.

Keeping your day job is the best decision you'll ever make

Haha glad you enjoyed it 😄 don't worry I know this is the biggest hardest bit, I've got some ideas / know some people but can't ask for work with no machine, and don't wana buy a machine with no work .... 😅

So xometry despite potentially not paying enough to make profit if it could cover machine costs then might be an option to get me going while I find some work.

Will put a chunk of my free time in and see what comes off it 👍

Don't suppose your UK based and have any experience with xometry ? Apologies if you have already posted on this, have read whole thread but don't remember the name of each.

I come from the UK (sunny Southampton), but have been in So California since '86

I did use xometry for some small parts a few months ago. Due to price chose the made in China option. Quality of parts was every bit as good as would have been done stateside by the best US shops, at about 25% of what they would have cost locally.

Remember, pretty much everyone you meet will tell you it's a great idea and they will send you all kinds of work. And 90% won't. The other 10% will. And will never pay

Ok thanks will bear this in mind, I've got a couple of people I have known a long that are going to send me abit, just hoping to get a few jobs with xometry to cover the bills while I build a bigger customer base.
