Material Price Trend?

With scrap prices down I would have thought material prices would follow, I haven't ordered for a while but a quick look and if anything they seem to be going up. What is everyone seeing for material prices in 4140, 8620, 1018 or 6061 these days? I'm debating increasing my next order if prices are going to continue to rise.

4140 is defiantly up from my vendors. But the rise has slowed.
I have not ordered any of my long term staple diameters I use often. I stocked up last year. Bit jobber quotes have seen a boost for sure

I’m sure there is an element of price fixing going on in most staple industries right now and in the name of stability the governments will look the other way for a while.
There is just too much else going on right now to follow up/investigate on every industry.

My 6061 pricing is well down from the peak, but 7075 is still way up high, which makes sense since a lot of the 7075 that I was getting a year ago and earlier was from Russia.

Regards.

Question: Where are material prices going?

Answer:up up and away.jpg

Most of our forgings have gone up by 30% minimum some have more than doubled in price. We may stop running our largest parts because at the price for materials nobody would be willing to pay for them.

I just bought a few thousand pounds of 6061 aluminum round at $2.85/lb and flat somewhere around $3 per pound. I bought similar quantities of material around this time last year and my recollection was price was similar. But last year I couldn't get anything in a timely manner. This year everything was in stock with every vendor.

I just got in 1018, 8620, and A36 HRR, and it all looked to be down a noticeable amount. The A36 I track order to order, and I know that came down quite a bit.

Admiral told me Copper went up .25 cents/lb yesterday and brass will follow.

I am seeing a slightly lower price on 5/8 round 2024 than 7 months ago, but no discounts on anything over 50 bars. I need 150 bars and dont want to tie up $5k for 6 months, but everyones electricity prices are going up and all my platers/heat treateres are sending me notices of price increases. I can imagine AL will be going up shortly, as well as all other electricity hungry processes.

12L14 and 1215 steels are somewhat stable, 4140 etc. is up a bit.

what are smaller weights typically sold as?

I brought 15rb slabs 3” long for 364(Canadian) 6 months ago
Usually 10 at a time. ($6.68/lb Canadian)
Had it quoted today for another small run and they wanted $875 a slab. (16.86/lb) this is more than the the product I make from it…

Getting pretty sick of being f’d on everything.
At this point it’s probably cheaper to sub all my production out than for me just to buy materials!

Just to add a data point, I got a quote for a large order of 4140 DCF Annealed for $3.25/lb with a 12 day lead time and a note that stock is low at the mill.

Did you ask about the price spike, and if so what did they say?
They said that they carry 16” dia. But not 15” dia, so they would need to order it from the states special order
16” round bar 6061 is quoted out at $8.34/lb for x7 3” long pc.
6 months ago the same request (15” rib) was $6.02/lb. so a 38% increase over 6 months per lb.

6 months ago they carried 15” stock and it was quoted out at $6.5/lb
But any additional would need to be pulled in for the states at a rate of $10.4/lb

Clearly I bought them out last time and they have never brought in anymore. Looks far more profitable to carry nothing and just drop ship if a customer is dumb enough to ok the PO.

I have not been able to find any 1/2" thick Brass plate for months now. no one will even give me a timeline for when they will get some. Been able to buy it in 2-6" flat bars though, haven't looked for wider.

I had just ran a bunch of 4140 in the last quarter, and I didn't think that it was high?
I don't recall specifically, but I'm gunna say on order of $1.50 +/- for 1000# 1-5/8" CFR from service center.

I don't know what "D"CF is tho?
What's D?
