Looking at a job secodary opp-ing some J shaped stampings.

Really not seeing the likelyhood of finding anyone reliable that is willing to run a transfer machine. I have seen robots sort similar parts at IMTS from bulk tub at least 20, if not 25 yrs ago, yet with all the threads and writs in the mags over the years, I can't say that I have ever seen this subject addressed.

Anyone here using it?

Who should I talk to about it?

I'm not finding that show?

There is the "Automate" show here in Detroit in early June, but I'm not finding anything for Boston.

???

We use a Canon RV1100 ( RV Series ) to locate single blanks for robotic press tending. It works fairly well, but performance will likely depend on the part shape and surface finish (bright shiny aluminum is harder to detect which parts are at the top of the pile).

Bin picking is not as easy as it looks. People have touch sensors, robots do not.
Fanuc, Cognex and maybe a guy named Dave Dechow.
Unsure the app but "J shaped' sounds like a problem out of a random bin. Perhaps a vibe feeder if small?
goggle "machine vision bin picking".
Have done it back quite a while ago..... nightmares on what seemed so straightforward.
Perhaps it is much easier now 30 years later with more cpu power so my experience is old and outdated.

This thing is WAY overpriced for what it is, but not necessarily for what it does, if that makes any sense.

Flexibowl | Flexible feeding and flexible assembly system

We have one in a system and it does the business. If you're likely to do a lot of this sort of thing with different parts, this sort of system can pay for itself pretty quickly.

Random bin picking is hard in the real world, unless you have big light parts with easy vacuum grip surfaces. Solutions like this that spread and stretch it out into a 2d problem work a lot better. There are other similar systems around.

Days after stating online that I don't know if I have ever, and certainly not in a long time seen any writs about vision systems, along comes Jones, and they put it right inside the back cover of the New Equipment Digest.

It's not a big writ, but more than I recall seeing anywhere else.
(I guess I don't currently get any automation trade journals)

3D bin pick

Fanuc. Our system was installed yesterday.

30 days in, I know - not a lot of time...
How is it going so far?

---------------

I went to the "Automate" show in Detroit yesterday.
I was less than impressed with the show...

First thing was that the show grid/layout absolutely sucked, and trying to walk a route that made sure that you didn't miss someone was a major endeavor. And there was no food. There WAS fruit cups, which I love fruit, but I was holding out for something representing red meat or at least Connies Pizza (Chi-Town) but it seems that real food there has gone the way of everything else these days, and left town with the Boomers....

So then I tried a cpl of drive-through's on the way home. 4:15 in the afternoon and 5-6 vehickles in line...
I drove home and had the 2nd 1/2 of a sub at the shop @ 7:00. (grumble)

I found no-one that was selling (showing) bin picking.
Not that this was a negative for the show as a whole, but it sucked for me as I took the whole day to run yonder, to not find any rep for what I was looking for. I like the Keyence offering and that was one that I particulalrly was wanting to see, but they didn't have much of anything in their booth at all.

I am hoping for more in Chi-Town in a few months.

My current application is null/void, but was interested to be further up-to-speed for a possible next time is all.

I should state that there WAS one outfit there that did have a bin pick app shown.
It was a pretty simple app, but it was bin picking.
Just not near the complexity as to what I would have been looking for.

I know it's no longer relevant but I am curious, how would the parts have come to you? Tangled up in a big bin or neatly stacked?

If they just show up in a bin I would imagine picking would be out of the question, it would be like trying to grab one fishhook out of a tangle of them.

Robot and camera are flawless , but get this… after 6 years of high, “we’ll take as many as you can build” demand from the customer, we are now idled on that program. You can’t make this shit up.

Not to hijack this but what are some alternatives to vision?
If you have a part that doesn't lend well to cameras because of color/ reflectivity, complexity (or I could also see a lack of it being just as difficult) what are people using?
We have some castings to load straight from a pallet, but have been told its going to be complicated. They're 16" rings with text (1" tall letters, about 8" long string, embossed 1/8" from face) on just the "top" face, how could you verify the text is up without a camera? Run a proximity sensor over the ring?
