You know those weeks where it feels like everything goes wrong? As a machine shop leader, it can be easy to place blame on team members, but before you do that, are you sure that you’re supporting them and giving them the tools and resources they need to succeed? Maybe your team isn’t receiving the right resources. That’s up to leadership to fix.

Of course “hand holding” is not recommended, but don’t mistake hand holding with giving your people the right resources and support. There’s a difference! Let’s not mistake hand holding with training guys up quickly and PROPERLY!

This is about effective leadership. Throwing people into something without the proper tools will lead to many preventable headaches, whether its scrapped parts or damaged technology. To train properly means guidance. Here are 5 pointers to make sure you’re supporting your people and training them to set not only them but your business up for success.

It is important to keep in mind that even when everything feels like it is going wrong, it won’t help to overhaul everything and start over. The best way to implement better systems and fix what is broken is to start small. Consistency and doing one issue at a time, as they come along is KEY!

    Make sure your apprentices carry small pocket-sized notebooks in order to record what they are doing right and what they need to work on and sometime on Friday, have a sit down with the new guys and go over their notebooks with them.
