This week, Pharme (new member) and I did some bottom feeding at an auction here in the Dallas area and had some success. We got a couple of Kurt Anglock vises for $295 each ($250 plus the ever present buyer's premium). This should be an improvement on the Bridgeport vise that came with my mill. Pharme's will look good on his "new" 1961 Index 645. We're just amateurs, so if someone can tell us what the slot on top of the fixed jaw is for, we'd appreciate it.
I've been wanting a rotary table for a while, and there were three. Naturally, the one I really wanted (a News 12 inch horizontal/vertical) was last in the sale order, so I bid on the second one just in case. It looked interesting and was described as "vintage" in the catalog. I got it for $150 (ok, $177). Then I got the News for another $150. Pharme kind of wanted one anyway.
The "vintage" one turned out to be a Yuasa 550-212 tilting rotary table, which MSC lists for $7000 and change. I have no idea what I'll be able to do with it, but I'm hoping inspiration strikes.
Then, I bought 7 "shop stools" for $20. Four of them were nice solid 5-wheel ones with up/down adjustments. Maybe I can attach one to my Bridgeport like the one in the other thread.
Finally, the previous week, I was watching another Bidspotter auction. When they got past the lots I was interested in and I hadn't bought anything, I left my computer. The next day, I got an email invoice for the lot I won??? I emailed back that it must be a mistake, and of course, IRS Auctions and Bidspotter both maintained that I made the bid. I got to looking at the lot, and it was a Dake No 1 (3 ton) arbor press on the Dake stand for $100 (+18%). Looked pretty good to me, so, rather than argue, I just bought it. The only thing I can figure is that I must have left the browser window open and my cat walked across the keyboard and bid on it for me. Glad it wasn't a $50,000 VMC. Now I know what Steve Martin was talking about when he said his cat had been embezzling from him.
