That PTO drive was an option, that could be hooked up to a TM/UM mill through a gearbox available that attached to the mill, and could be used for milling helical gears and such (I have a TM/UM, no gearbox). Probably not many people used that setup. I'm not aware of any other OEM hardinge setups that used the PTO (?). Guess one could adapt that PTO to something with a servo or stepper motor.

The hardinge-taper notched spindle-attached gizmo is a drive-plate for turning/mounting between centers; hardinge made dogs that go with that, which are two plates with bolts.

I have a nice set with the threaded spindle and no PTO. I'd like to find a taper-nose one since I have an HLVH and all sorts of chucks and step collets, that fit the taper mount. But I don't use it enough for it to be a priority.

Of course, another benefit of the accessories is that they may be used on any HLVH with the hardinge taper, and good-condition AHC chucks are hard to come by (I like those because the spindle mount is recessed into the body, so they don't stick out like backplate mounted chucks).
