I posted that I'm looking to buy a Tree 2UVR-C milling machine.

A member with the screen name davesw276 and zero posts contacted me through PM saying it you are still interested in a Tree mill text me at 1 336 864 1704.

I replied, asking for more information like photos, condition, tooling included, location and of course price. He replied again via PM text me at 1 336 864 1704. Clearly a scammer in my book.

Yep. There's been a rash of them here. I got no less than three scammers (and no legit offers) last fall when I was looking for an Omniturn lathe. All from new members with zero posts.

And it's not just here- every board I'm a member of, that has a classifieds section, is seeing it. You post a want-ad, they tell you oh yeah, I have one (or my buddy has one, etc.) just call or text this number, etc.

In my little market, even $40 paintball gear is game.

They'll show you some pictures, stolen at random from the internet, you "friends and family" a payment (which has no buyer protection) and they disappear.

Doesn't matter if it's $40 or $100 or $12,000. If they can't provide bona-fides, and don't have a posting record here, 100% it's a scam. No questions.

*Rant Warning*

These scum of the earth scammers are something that our Federal Government could (and should) actually do something about, but don't. They'll economically sanction the crap out of, and maybe go to war with Russia, who I don't give a rat's ass about if they take over Ukraine, but they literally don't give a shit about the tens of thousands of people in our own country, usually old, that get their life's savings wiped out by foreign scammers. This has been going on for at least a couple of decades. Politicians could care less. There is no special interest group to give them money. There is no lobbying firm that can employ all of their family members. There is no foreign corporation that will put their son on the board for a no-show 7 digit salary job. Politicians suck so much ass that it stains their teeth. But only if you give them money. I'm damn tired of it. Both parties suck. There are a couple specific people that don't, but not many.

I would not be inclined to extend trust to someone without a decent post count. That's the whole point of buying here, someone who has been a part of community for years is a fairly safe bet

It's not a "he", it's a"they". there's hundreds of them, on boards everywhere, Craigslist, Facebook, etc.

Contrary to Bucket's rant, governments worldwide ARE doing something about them, but it's a case of every time you take one down, two more appear.

Best you can do is be very skeptical.

Do NOT deal with- or even interact with- anyone making an offer with a zero post count, unless they can provide some pretty hefty bona-fides.

Do NOT send a PayPal payment "friends & family". You get zero buyer protection. Kiss that money gone.

All good points to protect yourself and family from scammers. But you need to be extra vigilant these days. Case in point, my wife received an email from our bank requesting that she follow a link to clarify a questionable transaction that was flagged. Luckily she asked me to look at the message before clicking on the link. Now I'm no IT guy but I know my way around a windows machine and the link, description, spelling, grammer and most of the message content was very believable. The red flag for me was they wanted a response within 2 hours so the matter could be cleared up.

The point is, these scammers are very good at what they do and getting better all the time so be careful how you deal with it. A friend of mine opened an invoice in an email (something he does daily in his business) and his computer and all files were seized. The ransom was $500 in bitcoin but after all the messing around with the Fed's investigating the case it actually cost him $900+ in bitcoin. But he did get all his files back.

This brings up a question. Do you guys have malware software and cleaner software on your windows machine? What is the best anti virus software these days and why?

User mimi309 with 0 post. Joined today, contacted me about a want ad I placed, saying to email their father about the machine I was interested in. Sent me a picture of the item taken from the lathes.co website. Scammer.
