A friend asked for advice on repairing threads on an 1854 volvanic. The threads on the barrel collar is stripped where locking screw goes thru. Screw appears to be OK. I am affraid collar is cast vs machined so deforming may be out. You can see hole in picture. This goes on end of barrell and held in place with locking screw roughly #4 i have not measured it yet. What is best way to rethread?83913010-0A3F-4752-9D0D-BC47A0B9FF88.jpeg

Seeing as the gun is worth $100k+,I think I would use one of the thread restorer polymer materials ..........you never do anything irreversible on antique arms that are very valuable ,and that includes any kind of weld or braze......and especially any disturbance of the "patina"

The prices fetched at auction for antique guns is nothing short of amazing.....guns like a 73 "0ne of one hundred" which a coupla years ago could be bought for maybe $3000,now fetches $1/2 million with obvious steel wool damage.
