I have a tang screw hole that is stripped on an old model 11. This is for the screw that goes through the trigger group into the rear tang to secure the buttstock. The factory screw is #12 x40tpi btw and I found a tap. The tang has a little flat below the action spring hole that is just over 3/8” wide.
For repair I have three options.
1. I’d prefer to make a threaded insert,5/16x24 od with the 12x40 id but that only leaves me with .20 or so wall thickness of the insert and idk if that’s enough, especially since I only have manual equipment and can’t time the threads to get maximum wall thickness.
2. Fill the hole by welding or brazing , drill and tap. I’m not that great brazing or with a tig torch
3. Make a dovetail threaded insert , cut a dovetail in the tang, insert and peen or soft solder in place. I’m worried I may weaken the tang by doing this .

Have you considered installing a Helicoil insert to the original thread size? If a kit that includes that size is available, it will restore the threaded hole to the original spec and strength.

Punch out the hole as large as you dare, or at least, split the difference between the tang and the thread size.

Silver solder in a filler plug, either threaded, or not.

Drill and tap the size you want!

is metal finish a issue ?
We have a few places around here that do the Micro Welding its actually very cool and not as defacing the material as a "standard" tig or mig welder.
If its just a older shooter a little time finding just slither of a size bigger tap/die and fix it that way.
Im curious to know if it stripped from mis use or the wrong thread on the screw.

Brownells has been my go to place for all things to fasten guns together.

you could epoxy a home made insert into it also.

Not a preferred way by any means but this has bailed me out more times than I care to admit.
Coat the screw in mold release, apply a little devcon marine epoxy to the threaded hole and carefully thread in the screw. This is dangerous as if the epoxy finds a way to bond to the screw your...... Fudge

If it works the poxy will create "new" threads.

oh and can a longer bolt/screw be used. Are the threads trashed completely from end to end ?

so way back when once a pon a time a co. called christy gun works has the fix an over size tap .248 x 40 tpi and they also sold an over size screw .they even had a tap to fix the rem 550 sear spring housing that some would try to reinstall with out getting the sear out of the way and would cross tread the housing . are we not machinist ? stop trying to reinvent the wheel and get on with it

Hahaha I remember those, I think Brownells sells oversize 6-48 screws too for the same purpose
Sadly this screw hole is fucked, someone tried to re drill and up size already so only half the hole / threads is there.
I’ve got it in the mill now, dialing it in to drill out the hole for bushing as stated above im going to silver solder in
