Does anyone have one of the sight soldering jigs or has anyone used one sold by brownells. I'm looking to make one, was wondering if anyone would share a few dimensions and are they all aluminum or are the uprights steel. Would appreciate any help

I made my own which was copied from the picture of the one that Brownell's sells. I guessed at all of the dimensions but I based them off of the main vertical post being .5" diameter.

The base is made from a piece of aluminum bar I had in the scrap bin and all the rods are made from steel. I have used it and it works well. I am not in the shop right now so unfortunately I don't have any dimensions to give you.

Thanks for responding. So you're saying the main round rod attached to the aluminum base is .500 inch diam. Pictured attached. If you could provide the diam. and length of the piece that houses the spring and pointed pressure piece I think I could go from there. I tried to attach a picture but the file was too large.

Okay, I got some dimensions for you. As far as most of the dimensions go none of what I did is written in stone. I made this on the fly without any drawing or blueprint so make adjustments as you see fit. The end result looks near identical to what is available commercially and works as it should.

The aluminum base is 1.75" wide x 3.1" long x 1" thick. The top of Vee goove is about .600 in diameter. The vertical post in the block is .375" diameter (not .5" as I guessed earlier) by 4.6" overall length (3.6" out of aluminum base). Horizontal cross piece is .750" diameter by 2.050 long. Horizontal piece that connects to vertical plunger tube is .750" for ~1.2" then turned down to .375" to fit in previous.750" horizontal piece. Overall length of that piece is 3.350". the vertical plunger tube is .625" diameter x 3.050" long. Said tube is reamed .3125" X 2.85 depth. Plunger is .3125" diameter by 3.050 long. Plunger has a hole drilled to a depth of .850 with a diameter of .235 for a spring to provide tension. I ran abrasive cloth over the plunger in order to get a nice fit in the vertical plunger tube hole. I milled a flat on the pluger to engage a set screw to keep the plunger from launching out of the tube while under spring pressure.

Depending on the job or how many you’re going to do, I soldered a few front site bases what I did was modified those mini body panel, vice grips. You can just grind and shape the ends to fit whatever you need I use the same style mini vice grips to make a spanner wrench for the M 14 M1 a flash hider nut. I would imagine if I was going to be doing several of them or often enough a more dedicated tool would be nice. I also used a magnetic indicator stand with a clip to hold a mauser rear sight sleave in place.

I want to thank all that responded. I got all the dimensions, had some materials on hand and others are enroute. I'll start machining tomorrow.

Thanks

Still waiting on some material, should be here by saturday......then i'll finish up.

Will try to post some pictures

Liking the fact offsite assists make for good result. To me, any solder braze effort benefits from spring loading the joint. Less an issue when the filler is added welding style, imperative with solder pieces laid into the joint pre application of heat.
