I'm working on a old Reed Prentice lathe and noticed they spliced the way build up material.
The work seems to have been done by someone who had a good knowledge of way repair and scraping.

Was It normal to splice 30 year's ago I'm guessing?

I was going to bump some oil pockets in but I'm not sure now...

I'm not in here to work on the ways I'm after the wacky thrust bearing on the cross slide

That doesn't look like a pro did it. I would bet the repairman spliced it because he had a short piece. The splice looks crude to me. Is that some brass pins in the end ? Where does the way oil enter or come from. You may want to cut some oil groves in the material where the oil comes in. Plus scrape some oil pockets. Take a few more pictures of the other side that the Turcite rubs on. What or where is the first picture at?

Looking at the 2nd picture the turcite is missing on the right side and it's been rubbing on the clearance surface. I would install some new Turcite B or Rulon 132. How thick is the old material? You should install the next size thickness - May have to mill off some iron, if you don't the gib will be to thick. Or mill off the new material. I normally mill the iron and scrape it flat before gluing on the thicker material. Then it needs to be match fir to the other side.
