what do they say? i thought we were here to express opinions.

hes a chinese guest professor and this, as it is written, surely was an assignment to one of his students. you woldnt believe how much stuff gets published just for the sake of publishing.

so what relevance do you see in this?

Well, I think it's interesting and useful. I do wish they had a proper optical profilometer with an interference objective, or similar commercial gadget, as it would have made short work of the problem.

@Conrad Hoffman I think what's cool about this is that while an optical profilometer may be out of reach for hobbyists like me (I saw one on ebay for $40k), repurposing the read head from a DVD player sounds very DIYable. @dian how do you figure he's a visiting professor? Looking up Kuan's bio it seems he was a professor in Taipei from 1989 to 2015, the paper is from 2010. @Richard King I don't know why these guys in 2022: https://www.researchgate.net/public...cal_Inspection_System_for_Mobile_Phone_Panels didn't cite the paper you talk about but it very much looks like the continuation of the same work, that is a low cost optical inspection system.
