Well I found two nice specimens of the late no5 4660 variety. One is a bar feeder collet machine and the other is a chucker with lead on threading attachment and an air chuck. Here are some shots of them on the trailer, I’ll post more once I have them on hand.

Of course they all posted sideways…this new interface is strange
Apple phone ? Apple thinks it's so cute, when you re-orient a photo instead of actually moving the pixels they just write a note in the file "rotate 90* clockwise".

That only works with Apple devices. Display it on anything else and it's fubar.

Once upon a time Apple was an okay company ...

A little bit of a squeeze but we got it off okay. Lifted off the deck and pulled the trailer out. I’ll skate it into the garage later once my kids are asleep, they are 2 and 3 and not very much help at all 😂

Got the machine in skates and skull drug it into the garage. My initial impression is pretty positive. Cross slide is nice and smooth, the turret indexes well, the ways appear free from damage for the most part, there doesn’t seem to be anything glaringly wrong at this point. There are a few signs of abuse like some knucklehead using a forklift under the pan and messing up the coolant pump, it still looks salvageable though.

The motor does appear to have been re-wires for 230v at some point. I didn’t think that was possible for a 2-speed motor? Maybe just not common?

A "3-jaw" air chuck?

Doo you have actual application for these?
Or did you just find a deal that you couldn't pass up?

Sapper,
Nice score man. Those are probably about the pinnacle of W&S machines and certainly worth their weight. The next thing you need to get is a dumpster to put the chips in. A couple right jobs and they will make profit without overhead or worry of payment. I'll bet they are down right accurate too, and material removal is what W&S was always about. Oh, no batteries to go dead or data to loose either.

Yeah the chucker has the W&S air cylinder setup on the back side and the controls by the chuck.

Application will be deep spade drilling with the bar feeder in a couple diameters between 1.5” and 1.75” 17-4.

Have a few other items that will take up the rest of the stations on the bar feeder machine and then some secondary ops I’ll run on machine #2 simultaneously.

My production volume will be in the dozens a month and will have some variability in lengths etc but for the most part will be repetitive. I’d be jobbing this stuff out but unfortunately it all has to be made in-house. Firearm stuff and whatnot…

I wrestled with whether or not a turret lathe was the right choice. I got some great advice in another thread but ultimately decided that these old gals would better fit the bill. I simply don’t have enough knowledge of automatics to go that route. I’ve found it hard enough as it is to get solid mentorship on basic machining. Besides, my volume is pretty low, kind of seems like a turret lathe is the sweet spot.

I needed a 2” thru hole but could not find any 4640s, that would have been my preference. These were the two best candidates I could find anywhere as far as low mile serviceable 4660s are concerned. All the 2XXX series machines were REALLY ragged.

These seem to be mostly complete and pretty much free from molestation.
