Vactra #2 for spindle lube

I have been using Vactra #2 all through my bridgeport as recommended by other members and BP repair shops an it has worked very well. My question is, can I doo the same with my 13" SB. It came from a school and is in very good shape, low hours of use. It needs a good lube because it has sat up for some time. Would it be OK to run Vactra #2 through out the lube points and ways or do I need to get Velocite 10 for the spindle?

Hi There,

Use Velocite in the spindle bearings. Vactra 2 is too thick
to flow into the tight bearing clearances via capillary action.

Good Luck!

I was using Velocite & discovered the spindle bearings would get a little warm. A member here suggested Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30 which appears to work pretty good. Ed

I would feel better using the Velocite 10. I really don't want to buy a gallon, any one here want to sell me a quart of the stuff. Or maybe I can buy a gallon if any one else wants to split it 4 ways. I don't want to get the gallon because it would take me 10 years to go through it. A quart would last me a while, can't stand the idea of 3 quarts rotting away in my shop when some one else could use it.

I think I am going to source all of the lubricants for a SB, then I will split them 4 ways so that you guys and my self can have a full lubricant package for our machines at a decent price. I will do some checking around and let you know. So far it would be Vacra 2, Velocite 10, a Teflon based grease and open gear lube.

These oils are sold on e-bay in the kit form. Do a search for South Bend oils and you will get a page worth of them. The price looks to be very fair .

one 8 Ounce Bottle of way oil, one 8 Ounce Bottle of spindle oil for $9.50. that is $76 for 1 gallon.
I just bought a gallon of each from MacMaster carr, they were about $40 for both. That's 2 gallons of oil.

$20 versus $76

unless you are looking at a another listing that I haven't seen, I don't think that's a very good deal. granted a gallon of each will last a very long time, maybe three or four years. and if you buy 8 ounces at a time the shipping is $5 for two bottles, that is an extra $40 for each gallon.

How is that reasonable.

Actually, Don makes a good point. The two-for-$9.50 sets are pretty nice, and you get both types of oil. Personally I think I'd rather go that route.

I looked at the Ebay oils an on the surface it looks like a good deal but they are 8oz bottles, the pictures make them look bigger. There are 32oz per quart so you get 1/4 of a quart. They are small bottles. For about the same price, split 4 ways, one could have a quart of each. I know 8 oz of way oil won't last very long. Like he said, $40 split 4 ways is $10 each. Shipping extra but the guy on ebay charges shipping too. I am checking today on the oils, I will post final price.

OK Steve, well argued. I'm back on board. :)

And don't forget to add a couple dollars on for some cheap containers.

Southbend Lathe lubricant package

Steve,
I'll take a quart, pm me with details.
Jimmy

Steve,

I'll take a quart as well

I have finished putting it all together. The package will contain 1 qt each Mobil One brand; Velocite 10, Vactra #2 and 3.5 oz of Magnalube G. My shop uses Mobil one oils all the time so the oils will be put into cleaned Mobil quart bottles to save on bottle cost. Small flip top squeeze bottles from Michael's craft store for the Magnalube. I have also looked into Mobil DTE Med/Heavy as part of the package as well. I would like to have it but I did not mention it in my previous post. Let me know if you would like to have it because demand will dictate if it is included.

Without the DTE: $18 plus shipping
With DTE: $23 plus shipping

I looked for open gear lube and came across a few brands. If you all are really wanting to get it at the same time it will add $8, but I found that most people are using way oil on the open gears with good results so I left it out.
The most the shipping could be is $15, flat rate box big enough to hold it all.
The first three have dibs if still interested, myself being the fourth. I can make up more as long as it is in quantities of 4. If you are close to Cobb/Paulding/Bartow county Georgia I can hand deliver it or you can swing by my place and pick it up.

Came across this from last year, but I am needing to get a full set of lubricants for my SB9A. Any chance of getting in on another round of sharing? Perhaps I can find enough people to share a gallon of Mobil Velocite in my area (Lehigh Valley, Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, PA).
