Hi, I need to repair my crossfeed and need some acme stock. I've sent two emails to steve wells with no response, hopefully someone here can help.

TIA Jimmy

Mcmaster Carr has a pretty decent variety of acme threaded rods and nuts. It won't bolt directly on as is, but not too hard to sort out if your lathe is already operational.

Thanks, I did look at McMaster, google etc. seems like 7/16-10 is an obsolete size. Can down size to 3/8-10 but even that is hard to find, with a matching tap. If I had a follow rest I’d make it, but that’s not an option unless martin model ends up casting some for the 10ee.

Depending on lathe model and clearances, you may be able to up-size to 1/2-10 LH threaded rod. I did this on my 9" Jr. and it works just fine.

Green Bay Manufacturing Co. in Two Rivers Wisconsin has left and right hand lead screws in whatever diameter, pitch and length you may need. they also have oversized machine to fit nuts in bronze and cast iron. I put a 5/8 8 LH in the cross feed on my holbrook, it is accurate enough that you can use the dial with confidence. www.greenbaymfgco.com 820 793 4848 I have no skin in this game, just a very satisfied customer.

Thanks guys. It is for a smaller Rivett, unfortunately not enough room to go up to 1/2”. I did try green bay, no luck on the 7/16. Smallest 10 pitch they have is 1/2.

Sounds like you will have to make some clearance for the 1/2". I have never seen a lathe that you could not open up a bit around the cross feed screw.

Oh there is one, and I have it. Rivett has an unusual assembly and I’d be afraid to get too wild with cutting things up. There is a 3/8-10 available but I cannot find a tap from a reputable maker.

JPD You could thread mill a nut. You could grind a single point point cutter to match the gullet of the acme thread and set up a die grinder in the tool post. Then set the gear box to cut 10 thread per inch and set the lathe to cut left hand threads then turn the spindle by hand as the die grinder cuts the thread.
