The collar came off another lathe. Cut a new mark. If the existing one bothers you, make a thin washer to go over the threaded part, or take a skim cut off the shoulder. This will change the angle at lockup.

Every time I try to cut one new mark, I wind up cutting two!

If dial is adjustable, position of mark immaterial, long as conveniently visible. Once confident scribing or engraving a fine index line, a shallow angled recess, a divot, will preserve it far longer than anything on circumference.
