A deal has been cut and money exchanged. Damn glad this forum exists to sort out what is to come.

Any observations would be welcome

Someone did something to it as it's a 230 3PH VFD from what I understand. Got it from the same Connecticut dealer I got my Mikron 79 gear hobber.

He was a bit vague when I asked the year and came up with 47. Was probably at home and nowhere near it.

Liquidates a lot of New England, see his stock rotate often.

It's also listed with a chromium travel dial which you can make out on the photos

It is a 5C, he also said the ways look good.

Full restoration of function would be the goal, being "original" isn't particularly important. Being a close tolerance tool room lathe is.

It's not in Colorado yet :p
But I'll see if they can forward one. I'd like to try to run the serial number

So he was way off, been crazy busy with work and other projects but I was wondering if this is a Monarch Collet Closer rather than an aftermarket given the covers.

Obviously I've started to remove some paint the over application was quite impressive they'd basically sealed it.

Yes, that's a Monarch lever-operated collet closer. It's shown on square-dial parts sheet 129. This thread discusses it:
The red handwheel is not original. My '43 round-dial has something similar.

Thank you very much.
Out of curiosity the flat diamond buss on top, to be drilled and tapped as a mount?

The flat spot on the top of the headstock end cover is for a pneumatic cylinder. (An air-operated version of the collet closer was an option.)

Out of curiosity I looked up National Screw Machine Works in an alphabetical listing of war contracts. Out of Newark NJ they appear to have supplied parts to the Navy for the ubiquitous TCS 14 / 15 radios. According to the Navy Manual list of manufacturer's.The awarded contract listed "slides"

I'll Wade through the manual for a better picture I guess.
