Does anyone know what these holes on the top of my compound are for? The one near the handle goes through to the top of the brass nut. The other goes straight through above the lead screw. I assume its there for oiling the screw but will be covered by the tool post.

I don't know your's exactly, but in compound rests they would be for shooting some oil in on occasion. The handle side not only is a bearing to hold feed screw straight and centered, but should also control end thrust of the feed screw. So both of which would take lube to keep nice smooth operation plus longevity.

The feed nut and threads of feed screw typically lubed closer to tool post, or midway between. To truly answer how well its lubed, I'd look at where nut is located on lower half, and the natural midway positioning of upper half to lower half, and where nut/ feed screw threads are. Might help you determine which way to run compound back and forth to spread lube through both.
