First year for USB on machines

If that is a faithful HW emulator, great.

New to me Van Norman 26

Releading was cheaper than buying a new motor. I think I paid somewhere between $100 and $200. For a one-time refurb, I didn't flinch. They washed out the stator windings, attached new leads (insulation was dying), and re-varnished the windings.

First year for USB on machines

Don't. Floppy disks aren't being made any more, and there're just a few distributors of the old stock that is already aging on the shelves. Even if your machine and its floppy drive are perfect, you (soon) won't be able to get any media. And floppy disks have a definite life span; they don't...

New to me Van Norman 26

On a slight tangent, the motor on my VN is so old (1956), it's from the earlier NEMA frame series. I decided to have a local motor shop relead and reseal the windings, rather than make an adaptor mount for a new(er) motor.

My VN is a #28A, with a totally different location for the feed motor, mounted to the right side of the knee. Can't help with that question on a #26.

    New Shop Concrete Thickness

Both of these points have already been made, but it's worth repeating. 1) Get the foundation specs from the machine tool maker. It may require a special foundation slab. 2) Once you get past a 6" good quality concrete slab, the subgrade condition makes a bigger difference in load bearing...

Building full of machinery. Where do I sell?

The simplest solution to get it all moved out is hire an auctioneer, preferably one that specializes in factory and machine shop closures, not the local horse lot barker.

Time for overhaul on my 10EE - Looking for someone in the PNW to help, no lifting required!

Please pin down your location a bit more. Are you a 10hr drive, a 6 hr drive, or a 30minute drive from, say, Portland, OR, or Seattle, WA? If you asking someone to come work on your machine (presumably for free), they need to know if it's practical or a PITA to get to your place. Especially...

Video of large planer mill with pushbrooms on fire

Yep, pretty sure that's it. I had (mis)remembered it as being taken from a higher vantage point, so there might have been a 2nd camera, but I am sure that's the same machine and slab. Thank you!

    Offhand tool grinder wheel designation?

6A2C? Most often in 6" diameter for Baldor 500 grinders, but the abrasive makers do make 6A2C wheels in different diameters.

Video of large planer mill with pushbrooms on fire

Several times in the past I have watched a video of a large planer mill (almost certainly an Ingersoll-Rand) facing off the top of a very large slab. (I can't recall if this machine had multiple heads in operation.) The cutters were making chips that probably weighed 0.5 to 2 lbs, and there...

    Ball Oilers, stupid questions

I don't have the Reilang push oiler, so can't say.

    Ball Oilers, stupid questions

The hands-on report is appreciated! I have bought some Reilang cans and also their oil-adapted "grease gun" for zerks, but am always on the lookout for a less expensive option that works well. Knowing what does not work well is helpful!

    Crashed Trumpf Dies

Drill a couple of holes through the bodies of the die parts to attach two chain shackles to both top and bottom. Use convenient brute force (e.g., forklift or tow motor) and immovable object (e.g., another forklift or wall of building) to pull die parts part.

A VFD for each motor will be fine. And give you the advantage of fine-tunable feeds as well as spindle speeds.

Speedline Sarface Grinder and Pantograph Attachments

What's the ID on the speeder? Equivalently, what spindle OD does it fit?

New to me Van Norman 26

While technology has loosened the rules a bit, you generally do not want to run two independently operated 3-phase motors on one VFD. A phase converter (rotary or electronic, like PhasePerfect $$$) will operate both motors fine. A VFD generally expects to get intimate with one motor, and...

What type is this split lead screw nut?

I don't know if it has a special name. Your belief that it is adjustable to compensate for wear is correct. More elaborate ones, often on mills, are spring loaded: you unlock the adjustment, the springs force the split nut components into contact with the screw, and you relock the adjustment.
