Proper bearings for a mill spindle rebuild?

Name is a bad adaptation of motor head I made many years ago, as I like building cars etc (yes I understand the engine vs motor in this particular crowd..) I run a spindle rebuilding co.

Proper bearings for a mill spindle rebuild?

We use induction heaters almost exclusively for bearing installation, knowing and taking advantage of the thermal characteristics of the different parts makes for a much easier assembly with better results. I also can confirm many bearing mfgs pluck the best bearings for the higher class, and...

Proper bearings for a mill spindle rebuild?

OOO, maybe driven by a pmac motor, thats powered by a wind turbine generator mounted to a generically modified rabid Tasmanian devil. Naturally this power distribution would be wireless after perfecting and executing on Nikola Tesla's theory. Seems like you should start at the dna...

Proper bearings for a mill spindle rebuild?

If you want to chase this down, go for it! The thing is, you are in very charted territory, many of us do this exact thing 5+ days a week. We know exactly how to address this for the best outcome given a particular set of performance requirements, no research or guesswork needed, we will nail...

    Electric Motor Repair Questions

Small motor shops seem to be disappearing, because IMO most motors worth rebuilding are more on the spindle side of the spectrum and they arent qualified for that, and what they can do is too cheap to replace that they cant compete. In your case, the motor will almost certainly work fine once...

    Wavy surface side milling

To happen in both x and y it makes ball screws less probable, unless severely loose and the whole table is movng/vibrating. Its more likely the spindle, check axial and radial play, drawbar force, test bar runout, and monitor vibration and heat. My guess is either drawbar issues or spindle...

Proper bearings for a mill spindle rebuild?

No offense meant here, but you are in over your head if you need to ask some of these questions. A few others have given good advice, which I can put a finer point on. Figure out what bearings came out of it, and then buy the highest quality replacements you can find, dont expect them to be...

    Matsuura VX-1000 Spindle Rebuild

Sorry your rant is just not accurate. Its also not relevant to the spindle at hand, and somehow you missed that the OP did indeed send the spindle to a third party rebuilder. Normally Id let this go but its worth setting the record straight for machine owners so they can make educated...

    Matsuura VX-1000 Spindle Rebuild

Ya, unfortunately Id be very surprised if Matsuura support you with that data. Physically these spindles are fairly simple to install, but as with anything the devil is in the details. Off the top of my head; The drive coupling runout and concentricity with the motor coupling is crucial, a...

fretting marks on toolholders, problem? how to fix?

This has gripper balls, which is why the grease is suggested. I didnt realize this was a Haas.. definitely check retention force, I see these drawbars fail daily.

fretting marks on toolholders, problem? how to fix?

Check your drawbar retention force. Taper doesnt look great.. And dont repeatedly use scotch brite on anything you care to retain dimensional accuracy, you are removing material and therefore exacerbating the problem.

See attached. If you see broken bellevilles you have a drawbar issue and should address is before using the machine. If the actuator has lost oil, it went somewhere so its worth rebuilding that too since theres obviously a seal leaking somewhere.

    Measuring a ring gauge ?

If you look close enough, there are always differences in any measuring equipment. If you don’t see it with a micron gauge, get into nanometers and you’ll see it. We have ring gauges and blocks, all things considered rings “should” always be better, assuming they were right to start, held at...

    Measuring a ring gauge ?

Looks like someone beat me to it, but unfortunately this box has no data on it and has been here since before my time. I would think that anyone who makes blocks would make or use a setup like this. Google says its called a gauge block holder, if you search that youll get a bunch of good...

    Measuring a ring gauge ?

We measure bores daily to the micron with setups like this. If you need to get to the micron level or tighter there are a lot of considerations for environmental factors but thats another conversation and certainly beyond the scope of this simple engine project. This wont do much for...

That’s possible, usually there are proximity sensors that are on the actuator or on the drawbar. If it is traveling it’s full stroke, it’s doing its job. If it’s not traveling far enough to trip the sensors you should be getting alarms. If it is indeed not stroking far enough, it could be the...

Its a drawbar issue not an actuator issue. If its throwing tools you should take it out of service immediately and have the drawbar rebuilt or replaced.
