Time to buy a....Cylindrical Grinder?

We need to add in house OD grind capability, we make lots of nitrided bushings, valve stems & pins, and 60% of the stuff goes out to grind prior to Nitride. Low quantity high mix work. We have a Sunnen hone, works great for the stuff we do, so do not reccisarily need ID capabilities on the grinder. Basically first concern is dust control, second concern is budget. What are my options with a say 25k budget? (obviously used). Is a DRO a must? Does coolant knock down most dust so its not really an issue? , assuming anything enclosed is out of budget.

With a recirculating coolant system you won't have a dust issue. Over 58 R/C I highly recommend CBN wheels. We have a manual 8-20 Shigya that is used for low volume high accuracy work. Don't discount an ID feature, we have a Sunnen hone too, but if it's not a thru hole, you will need the ID too. Surprising how much hard turning we do also. But sometimes griding is the only option, especially with interrupted cuts. Yes, DRO is really useful.

With 25K you can probably buy several grinders. You did not mention size. If you add your location to your profile you just might find out someone close by has one they can part with and you won't have to pay to get one lugged across the nation.

Work size is important for ease of altering wheels, here is an interesting machine.
I could inspect it if you wish.
Agree shopping around one may find a good grinder for half that price

Hi michiganbuck:
What do you think about those B&S 13's
I've always had the hots for one because you can run surface grinder sized wheels on it and you can take them off, dress them on another grinder if you need a form on them and then just mount them on the machine you want to run them on.

But they're really a toolmaker's grinder and apparently not nearly as accurate as a "real" cylindrical grinder mostly because they're not that stout and run a small wheel on a wimpy arbor.
So how good (or not) are they for production grinding?

Cheers

The 13-grinder wheel collum turns on a huge protractor numbered dial circle so you can turn and dress a very close angle, put a wheel on both ends on the spindle, it is super long 22" or so on a small base/footprint, has a pick feed so one can feed in a tenth, can us 7 and 8" wheels for the ability to have a gang of pre dressed wheels. the tabletop has a V way so the head and tail are closely held in alignment so a very handy machine. for gauge work and few-ups odd parts the 13 is very nice.
I think it is one of the best small OD grinders.'But it is not as fast a TC grinder as the Cinci 1 and 2 TC grinder and clones of the #2 are hot rods for sharpening.

For heavy production grinding, I might choose the Landis, Norton, bigger Brown & Sharps. Warner Swasey, Kellenberger, over the 13-grinder. Guess I would call the Landis the best.

Newer machines have tarry left and right, ball screws, CNC controls ..features that can be very handy... I would like like having all that on an old school grinder,
I am old school, likey there are great grinder that I have never tried.

Out lathes max at 10.8" OD x 21" LG so probably try to match it with something with a 8-10" od x 19-24" lg.

Honestly about half our work is centerless, the other half is on center, we do not have room for both so cylindrical is the direction we are looking at.

We are located in Massachusetts

A universal is just a cylindrical grinder with a table angle adjustment.
Here is an interesting machine with a few nice features.I haven't used the shipman od grinder, but have used Shipmal SGs and they were decent.
Tarry is a nice feature this machine seems not to have, to lightly bump the shoulder/side with a set lickle grind.
Pick feed and to-a-stop are important/handy and the sight spindle oiler is good features it does have.
