Wire won't Thread out of Pipe End

Hey all,

We have MV4800 WEDM that is having a problem threading that I've never encountered before. The wire threads on its own past all the diamond guides, past the lower roller, and into the long tube that takes it back to the wire chopper. However, just before it can get out of that tube and into the pipe end block(the clear block that then threads it into the two rollers) it gets stuck. It feels like there is a wall preventing it from getting any further. I've tried manually threading it by hand, automatic threading, threading with and without wire collect on but to no avail so far. I've taken apart the wire chopper and cleaned everything out, took part of the ending of the tube out and checked to see if there was a blockage in the pipe(there wasn't one) verified that all the components are in good condition/where they need to be everything looked normal even compared it to our other MV4800 that is currently working, nothing seems out of place.

I manually threaded some wire through till I got to whatever is stopping the wire from threading and pulled the wire out and measured the wire. From the top of the bottom flush cup to whatever is blocking my wire it is give or take about 8ft and 3in.(+/- 1 in. maybe since it was kind of a pain in the ass to measure.) If anyone has had this problem before or anyone has any ideas please let me know I am not quite sure what to do next.

Thanks,

What make machine is it? My first guess would be a plugged water/wire seperator...happens on my Sodick sometimes...

It is a Mitsubishi, where is yours located on your Sodick I'll take a look at it right away and see if I can find it on mine

Verify that the stainless tube is telescoping correctly, Had to put a hose clamp and a small bar on ours to keep it working correctly. See if you can hand or auto thread with the machine near the Y+ limit

So I am about 75% sure that the long tube the wire enters after clearing the lower roller is at fault. I pulled it out and it is in pretty rough shape I am guessing it hasn't been touched since we got the machine. Wire seems to be coiling up inside and getting itself stuck due to debris and mainly poor condition of the pipe itself. If this is what your referring to Jim then you might be spot on. Is it best to just outright order a new one? I assume it'll be around $200-$300 to get a new one, or is there some way to work around it? I went ahead and tried cleaning it with a brush attached to some wire and just dragged it through, though it didn't seem to help much if at all.

The most important things with all wire machines is keeping them spotlessly clean (everywhere). A dirty pipe would potentially be a problem but not the only possible problem. Check the whole system from front to back, where the wire goes in and comes out. A problem (small piece of free broken wire, dirt stopping conductivity etc) anywhere in this chain can cause the machine to not know where the end of the wire actually is...

I have replaced the tube on an older cx machine, not on a mv yet. We have a similar home made long pipe cleaner i will put on a drill gun and clean the pipe from time to time. No work around besides indexing the tube 180° that may band aid it for a while.

I've ran into this issue on my Sodick as well in the past. What I do if I think something is in my main tube the carries the wire to the back rollers, I disconnect the tube at my lower head and in the back of the machine, get yourself a Drinking Straw cleaning brush and some stable wire or something similar, run that thru the tube, attach the cleaning brush and then pull it back through the pipe. This is get any loose pieces of crud or wire in there.

This doesn't always fix the issue, but it helps and it keeps that tube clean.

I'll try and clean out the tube a few more times make sure it is as clean as possible and if that still doesn't get the job done I guess its just time for a new pipe. And if all else fails I have a PM coming up in the next few weeks and I'll bring up the issue then.

I just find it odd that it just upright quit on me, there was no slow deterioration, the wire didn't just start sometimes having problems getting through that gradually got worse. I ran a job it was a little undersize so I was going to have it do the last skim over again to get it closer to size and then "bam" the wire just wouldn't go through.

Had the same issue not too long ago on my Sodick AQ750LH. Took the clear resin box off, soaked it in CLR overnight and then rinsed it real good the next day before reinstalling it. No more issues. Also, make sure "wire run" is on when manually threading. I tend to have my guide open, water on along with wire run on when doing manual threading through the lower head.

No need on a mits, all you need is wire collect on. Once you thread into the lower hear the roller will grab it and do the rest. You can also hand crank the large roller with the handle once it grabs.

Forgot to update this thread when I figured out what happened. But there was a plastic cap that attaches to the end of one of the pipes that guides the wire to the back of the machine. The epoxy that was holding that plastic cap to the end of the tube wore off and that plastic cap made its way all the way through that pipe and was blocking the wire from threading into the roller. Removing that plastic cap and putting in a new one on that pipe fixed it.
